The General Tire and Rubber Company was founded in 1915 by William O’Neil and Winfred E. Fouse in Akron, Ohio, the rubber capital of the world. General Tire entered a booming market with over 300 competitors, so O’Neil and Fouse bypassed the original equipment (OE) market and moved straight on to focus on producing a quality replacement tire.
Harvey Firestone founded The Firestone Tire and Rubber Company in 1900 in Akron, Ohio, the rubber capital of the world. He recognized the overwhelming potential for automobile tires. 
In 1941, South Korea founded Hankook Tire under the name “the Chosun Tire Company.” The Chosun Tire Company changed its name to Hankook Tire in 1968.
Established in 1894, Kelly Tires is the oldest American-made tire brand. Kelly Tires was founded in Springfield, Ohio as a solid-rubber carriage and buggy tire producer.
Kumho Tire Co. Ltd., formerly known as The Samyang Tire Co., Ltd., was founded in South Korea in 1960. Samyang Tire produced its first tire in 1961 and settled technological ties with UNI Royal in the United States in 1963. By 1976, Kumho Tire was producing more than one million tires per year and breaking records as a Korea-based tire manufacturer.
As a branch of the Toyo Tire & Rubber Co., Ltd., Nitto Tire was founded in 1949 in Japan. In 1966, Toyo Tire became the first Japanese tire manufacturer to establish a distribution branch in the United States, then began manufacturing tires in the U.S. in the late 1980s.
Giovanni Battista Pirelli founded Pirelli & Co. in Milan in 1872, and rubber production began within two years. Pirelli began producing bicycle tires in 1890, and the first automobile tire followed.
